Give the Gift of Membership!

With Christmas now only a week and a half away, time is rapidly running out to finish up all of your shopping and wrap all of those gifts. In fact, if you have just looked at your list and realized that you forgot someone or that you still haven’t found gifts for some of the people that are hard to shop for, you may be starting to reach that point of panic. However, there’s no reason to fear the fact that Santa is coming to town because if you need some gifts quick, one of the easiest ways to grab some gifts (and help out a local non-profit at the same time) is to purchase a membership to a local public garden, museum, or zoo for your friend or family member.

Local public gardens, museums, and zoos typically offer annual memberships that will give your friend or family member a number of benefits including free or discounted admission, discounts on purchases in the gift shop or other similar locations, invitations to special members-only events, and a variety of other perks. In fact, many gardens, museums, and zoos actually have reciprocal agreements with other similar institutions so that if you have a membership for one garden, museum, or zoo, you may be able to use it to get free or discounted admission at another garden, museum, or zoo (although, it is important to note that only some institutions will accept memberships from other institutions, and there may be some additional conditions that apply in some cases.) Best of all, you don’t even need to leave your house to get one. All you need to know is your friend or family member’s address and the website of the organization you want to get them a membership from such as the Museum of Science or Zoo New England.

Help Your Community on Family Volunteer Day

Are you looking for a way to teach your kids to help others? Would you like to find a way that you and your family can get involved in your community? Well, if you answered yes to either of these questions, you may be in luck because it just so happens that tomorrow (Saturday, November 19, 2016) is Family Volunteer Day. Family Volunteer Day is a nationwide event, designed by Points of Light and sponsored by the Walt Disney Company, that encourages families across the country to carry out acts of kindness and/or volunteer to complete projects for their local communities and neighborhoods.

In fact, if you’re in the Boston area, there is a local Family Volunteer Day event in Dorchester from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. on Saturday (November 19, 2016.) This event, which is run by Boston Cares, will allow you and your family members ages 5 and up to help create basic engineering kits, make-your-own robot kits, and other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) kits for students in the Boston Public School System. And, if you are not in the Boston area, you can still find opportunities to volunteer in your local area by using the search feature on the Points of Light website.

STEM Activities for Kids: Girls Day and the Mini Maker Faire

The ghouls, goblins, and ghosts have all returned to whence they came but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the fun has to end. In fact, if you’re looking for a way that your kids can have some fun and learn something too, there are two events in the Boston area this weekend that will definitely help.

First, if you have a young woman in your family who loves science and engineering or you would really like to get your daughter interested in science and engineering, there’s probably no better event to spark a young girl’s interest in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) than Girls Day at the MIT Museum. This is because this biannual event, which is scheduled to take place from 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. on Saturday (November 5, 2016), will give your daughter the opportunity to meet women engineers, learn about robotics and coding, and even try building and programming some robots herself. However, if you have a young boy, a group of children of different genders, or you just don’t want to pay to get into the Museum, you can always head over to a local Barnes and Noble this weekend. This is because Barnes and Noble is hosting their second annual Mini Maker Faire from 11:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. on Saturday and Sunday (November 5th and 6th, 2016). This event, which is free and open to the public, will allow you and your children ages 6 and up to meet designers, engineers, and teachers who will demonstrate their skills with coding, programmable music, robots, virtual reality, and a whole lot more. Best of all, the events at each store will feature games and other activities that will allow your children to create and experience the wonders of science firsthand. Halloween Weekend: Ghost Stories and Zombies

All Hallows Eve is almost upon us, and this weekend may be your last chance to indulge in all of the thrills and chills that the season has to offer. Fortunately, if you’re looking for a way to embrace the Halloween spirit, there are a couple of events this weekend that are sure to send shivers down your spine.

First, if you have always loved the idea of sitting in an old cottage listening to creepy tales by candlelight or sitting outside by a campfire sharing your local ghost stories, Pioneer’s Village in Salem may have exactly what you’re looking for. This is because Pioneer’s Village is hosting the last night (at least for this year) of their annual Dark of Night event on Saturday (October 29, 2016) with stories starting at 7:00, 8:00, and 9:00 P.M. This event will feature a group of local authors and storytellers that will share the frightening tales they have written or discovered while you sit by the candlelight in an exact replica of the type of thatch-roofed cottage you might have seen in 1630. Secondly, if you’re a huge fan of Shakespeare and a huge fan of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, there’s a show at the Boston Center for the Arts (BCA) Plaza Black Box Theatre on Tremont Street in Boston that you won’t want to miss. This is because the Anthem Theatre Company is performing Twelfth Night of the Living Dead every night from now until November 5, 2016. This show will take Shakespeare’s famous play, Twelfth Night, and as you might expect, add the only thing that really makes almost every literary work better: Zombies. Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Boston Common

Star Wars fans of the Boston area rejoice! If you’ve been dying to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens on the big screen again or you missed it when it was on the big screen the first time around, you’re going to love this one. Mayor Martin J. Walsh, in partnership with the Skating Club of Boston, is holding the last of his 2016 series of movie nights at the Boston Common Frog Pond from approximately 7:00 P.M. to approximately 10:30 P.M. tonight (Friday, September 23, 2016).

This event, which is sponsored by Northeastern University and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department as part of their ParkARTS program, will let you see Star Wars: The Force Awakens in its entirety while you devour all of the free popcorn (courtesy of AMC Loews Theatres) that you can get your hands on. The movie itself will begin at dusk, but you may want to get there a little early to find a good spot to sit and make sure that you don’t miss the beginning of the film. Mix 104.1’s MixFest 2016

There are very few things in life that are certain, but unless it rains tomorrow (Saturday, September 17, 2016), there is one thing that is pretty much guaranteed. Music fans in the New England area will descend upon the DCR Hatch Memorial Shell in Boston like a tidal wave. In fact, if you’re a big fan of music festivals looking for your latest festival fix, you may want to join the wave of descending fans yourself because one of the best free music festivals around will be taking place at the Hatch Shell this weekend.

I am, of course, talking about Mix 104.1’s annual MixFest, which will take place on the Esplanade from 11:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. tomorrow. This festival will feature several well-known artists including Ingrid Michaelson, Shaggy, and OneRepublic. It will also feature the winner of Mix 104.1’s local “15 Seconds of Fame” competition, Tyler & Ryan. The music for the event will actually begin somewhere in between 2:00 and 2:30, but you should definitely try to get to the Esplanade as early as possible because the gates open at 11:00 A.M. and there is only a limited amount of space available. The Red Sox Showcase Powered by T-Mobile

Have you ever wanted to see what it might be like to play for the Boston Red Sox? Have you always wanted to experience firsthand what it would be like to practice like a Major League Baseball player or what it would be like to steal second base? Has the overwhelming urge to take a selfie of yourself standing in front of the Green Monster been more than you can bear as of late? Well, if the answer to some or all of these questions is yes, it just may be your lucky day. This is because the Red Sox Showcase, which is sponsored by T-mobile, is hitting the road this weekend and will be appearing at the Lawn on D in South Boston from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. today (Friday, September 9, 2016), at Baxter Riverfront Park in Somerville from 12:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. tomorrow (Saturday, September 10, 2016), and at a number of other locations throughout the area until October 15, 2016.

The main attraction of the Red Sox Showcase is a 15-foot mobile truck that is designed to look like the Green Monster. However, this truck is no ordinary vehicle, as the truck actually has panels that will move to form a replica of the Green Monster so that you can get that selfie that you’ve always wanted. The truck also has a batting cage, a pitching accuracy station that will let you demonstrate that you really are ready for the majors, a station that will let you experience firsthand just how hard it can be to steal second base, and a virtual reality station that will let you see what it would be like to stand on the field of Fenway Park during a baseball game. Best of all, the event is completely free and open to all ages, so you can definitely bring the kids. See Zootopia for Free at the Prudential Center

You may not be familiar with Walter Winchell’s somewhat famous line, “It’s a sure sign of summer if the chair gets up when you do.” However, there’s little doubt that his words sum up what a lot of people in the Northeast are thinking right about now. In fact, I have a feeling that there’s a fair number of people who would sum up the current level of heat and humidity in one word: “gross”. Fortunately, if you’re looking for a way for you and your kids to sit back and enjoy yourselves when it may be a little bit cooler out (“little” being the key word at the moment, I’m afraid), you may want to head over to the Prudential Center tomorrow night.

This is because the Prudential Center is hosting the Magic 106.7 Family Film Festival in its South Garden every weekend until the end of August. This outdoor event, which is scheduled to begin at 6:00 P.M. every Saturday unless it rains (in which case the event will be moved to Tuesday), will give you and your family the opportunity to listen to music, participate in kid’s activities, win prizes, and see a kid’s movie for free. This week’s movie is Zootopia, so if your kids are huge fans of the movie or just fans of talking animals and RMVs run by sloths, you should definitely check it out. Boston Harbor Pirate Ship Cruises

Chances are, you’ve probably heard the song, “Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me)” at some point. In fact, if you’re a true fan of fictional pirates (or just a fan of Disney), you’ve probably seen all of the movies and ridden the ride where the song first appeared at least once. However, have you ever had the chance to actually see what it might be like to be a pirate yourself?

Well, if you haven’t, you’re in luck because Massachusetts Bay Lines is conducting a series of pirate cruises this summer. These cruises, which will take place each day at 12:00 P.M., 2:00 P.M., and 4:00 P.M. from now until the beginning of September, will allow you to sail around Boston Harbor aboard a tall ship manned by the most motley crew that you will probably see in quite a while. This crew will brace the yardarms, hoist the sails, sing shanties, tell you tales of the sea, and, of course, fire the cannon. Best of all, if you can’t make it during the day and would really like to see the harbor at sunset, Massachusetts Bay Lines also offers a pirate sunset cruise daily from 6:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. Cirque du Soleil Boston: Kurios

“Curiouser and Curiouser!” The famous phrase from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland certainly sums up the fantastic world that Alice falls into in the story. However, Wonderland is not the only world that the phrase could be used to describe (and no, I’m not talking about our own world even though the phrase probably does apply.) In fact, these well-known words could probably be applied to any number of incredible realms that appear in artwork, books, movies, television, stage performances, and other artistic works. Yet, the one show that these words probably fit better than any other is Cirque du Soleil’s touring production “KURIOS: Cabinet of Curiosities.”

KURIOS: Cabinet of Curiosities, which will have its final performance in the Boston area this weekend at Suffolk Downs, is a circus like none you have seen before. This show features some of the most amazing acrobats, dancers, jugglers, percussionists, and other performers that you will ever see performing a series of acts with a steampunk theme. The element that truly makes the show amazing, however, is the huge number of curious objects or, in other words, curios that the performers will display and use throughout each of their acts. This combination of incredible performances and mechanical marvels will give you a chance to see (and, in some cases, not see) a world that is very different from our own. And, if you would like the chance to feel like Alice, you can always take the T from Wonderland to get to the show.
