Entertaining Your Kids Before the Big Game

If you’re a sports fan living anywhere in New England, there’s a very good chance that you already have plans tomorrow afternoon. In fact, if you’re a football fan, you’re probably already well aware that it’s that fine time of year again when the hopes and dreams of devoted fans everywhere can be realized or dashed in a few fleeting moments. Now, I am, of course, talking about the playoffs because every game could be the last game of the season for your team. However, if your kids are not football fans and/or you’re desperately looking for a way to entertain your kids before the Patriots game tomorrow (perhaps in the hope that they will actually let you sit and enjoy the game), the Coolidge Corner Theatre may have exactly what you’re looking for.

This is because the Coolidge Corner Theatre is hosting a special event entitled “Fantastic Journeys: Animated Shorts from Children’s Film Festival Seattle 2015” from 10:30 A.M. to approximately 11:45 A.M. tomorrow (Saturday, January 16, 2016). This event, which is intended primarily for younger children, will give you and your kids the opportunity to watch 11 animated short films from the Children’s Film Festival in Seattle. These films, which range from 2 to 12 minutes long, come from all around the world, and include animated shorts from countries such as Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, the United States, and more. Can’t Stop the Serenity

“You can’t stop the signal, Mal.” Truer words have never been spoken because almost every show has some diehard fans, but there are very few shows that have the cult-like following of Firefly. In fact, Firefly fans are so dedicated that there is actually a widely accepted and recognized term for fans of the show, Browncoats, which of course comes from the show itself. However, these fans are not your typical television followers because they are not only interested in preserving the memory of a beloved show that was cut short before its time but also interested in trying to use their beloved show as an excuse to help others. I know using a show to help others may sound sort of strange if you’re not familiar with the event that I’m talking about, but if you’re a Firefly fan, someone that just wants to see what everyone else is so excited about, or someone that just wants to help a good cause, I highly recommend that you check out the 10th anniversary screening of Serenity at the Can’t Stop the Serenity Charity event.

Can’t Stop the Serenity is an annual charity event organized by Firefly fans that allows people to purchase tickets to see the Firefly movie, Serenity, as it was meant to be seen – on the big screen. All of the profits from these screenings, which take place all over the world, are donated to Equality Now. The charitable work of the Browncoats does not end there, however, because in addition to the $1,000,000 they have raised for Equality Now over the last 10 years, they have also collected a variety of donations for local food banks and other charities. As a result, if you’re looking for a way to have some fun while helping people this weekend, please think about attending the 10th Anniversary Screening of Serenity at the Coolidge Corner Theatre tomorrow, Saturday 26, 2015 at 11:59 P.M. Game of Thrones: Season 5 Premiere

Winter is coming, but fear not for the only snow we’re talking about here is a member of the Night’s Watch. In fact, as you may have guessed from the title, this week’s post is not centered around the winter season, but is instead centered around the HBO series, Game of Thrones. This is because this Sunday marks the premiere of the fifth season of the popular TV series based on the novels by George R. R. Martin. As a result, fans of the show can rejoice because their long wait for more battle, betrayal, brinkmanship, and beautiful visuals has finally come to an end. However, if you are a true fan of the series and you’re looking for a way to really get into the spirit of Westeros, there are a few things this weekend that are sure to help.

First, if you have children who are a little too young for Game of Thrones, but you would like to include them in the medieval excitement surrounding the series, you may want to check out Alex the Jester. Alex the Jester, who is performing at the Coolidge Corner Theatre tomorrow (Saturday, April 11, 2015) at 10:30 A.M., is a modern day court jester. He has appeared throughout the United States and Canada to demonstrate his comic skills and made several TV appearances, including appearances on America’s Got Talent and Showtime. Secondly, if your kids are old enough for Game of Thrones or you would really just like to try your hand at taking over the world of Westeros on your own, you may want to try the Game of Thrones Board Game. The Game of Thrones Board Game, which adds its own unique twists to familiar games like Risk and Diplomacy, will allow you and up to 5 other players to take control of one of the houses of Westeros. Your ultimate goal, of course, is to use every tool at your disposal to decimate your enemies and cement your control over the Iron Throne. Finally, if you don’t have kids or you’re planning to leave the little ones with their grandparents while you find a way to embrace your love of your show, the Violet Thorn in Natick may have the perfect event for you. This is because the Violet Thorn has planned an Authentic Game of Thrones Dining Experience from 2:00 P.M. tomorrow (April 11, 2015) to close on Sunday (April 12, 2015.) This dining experience will allow you to enjoy a number of Game of Thrones-inspired dishes, including Baratheon Blood Wild Boar Rib, Beef n’ Bacon Pie, Dragon’s Tail with Fire Breath, Sansa’s Homemade Lemon Pie, and Violet Thorn’s King’s Landing Confit. Entertaining Your Kids in the Winter

Parenting can be an extremely rewarding experience, but it can also be pretty tough because there is an amazing amount of work involved in raising a child. In fact, the average parent is regularly required to juggle work and home schedules, pay extra bills to clothe and feed their children, take care of their children when they are sick or upset, and perform a variety of other tasks with little or no sleep. However, one of the issues that many parents come up against in the wintertime is how to get their child to do something other than stare at a computer screen or a TV screen when sending them outside could potentially cause them to get frostbite in a matter of minutes. Fortunately, if you are looking for some ways to get your kids out of the house and away from their screens this weekend, there are a number of events in the Boston area that will help you do exactly that.

First, if your child is a fan of scavenger hunts and/or science, there is no better place to be this weekend than the Museum of Science. This is because the Museum of Science, with the help of Watson Adventures, is hosting the Mad Science Family Scavenger Hunt at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday (January 17, 2015.) This scavenger hunt will allow you and your family to search the museum for all of the best exhibits, including dinosaurs, hidden messages, a mad scientist’s laboratory, musical zebras, optical illusions, snakes, and more. Secondly, if your child is more into comedy than chemistry, you may want to check out the Airborne Comedians. The Airborne Comedians, who are performing at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline at 10:30 A.M. on Sunday (January 18, 2015), are a pair of globetrotting jugglers. These jugglers will toss and catch everything from bird baths to lawn chairs while they crack jokes on unicycles (yes, you read that correctly. They will be balancing on unicycles while they juggle and joke.) Finally, if your child would prefer a good fairy tale to some learning or laughs, you may want to try the BCA Black Box Theatre in Boston. This is because the imaginary beasts are performing Kerplop! The Tale of the Frog Prince at the BCA Black Box Theatre every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from January 17, 2015 to February 7, 2015. This show will give you and your children the opportunity to see a Panto retelling of the classic story of an unfortunate prince who is turned into a frog and has to convince a princess to kiss him. Kid-Friendly Activities This Weekend

Easter on the Death Star — Wow. Even these guys know that spring is here!

Let’s face it. Winter in New England is cold, and if you’re a parent who isn’t a big fan of your kids losing their extremities, you may have been a little less than keen on the idea of letting them go outside and dive into a snow bank in 10 degrees. The only problem is that when you keep a child cooped up in the house all winter long, they tend to go a little stir-crazy and take you right with them. Fortunately, if the weather outside is any indication, the time to let them escape is finally upon us. In fact, if your wallet is feeling a little light after all of the money that the nice heating man (or woman) took to keep your house warm all winter, there are a number of kid-friendly activities this weekend that won’t make you (or your wallet) scream in pain.

First, if your kids just can’t wait to have an Easter egg hunt and/or your Easter plans really don’t leave a lot of time for a hunt next weekend, you may want to head on over to Pope John Paul II Park in Dorchester tomorrow. This is because Phillips Candy House is sponsoring the 22nd Annual Department of Conservation & Recreation’s Spring Egg Scramble in the park from 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. tomorrow, April 12, 2014. This event will allow your children to join an enormous number of other children to search the park for nearly 10,000 eggs filled with toys. Best of all, the event is completely free. Secondly, if your kids are more interested in magic and optical illusions than they are in eggs (which, depending on the purpose of the eggs, may not be such a bad thing), the Davis Museum at Wellesley College has a program that your kids won’t want to miss. This is because the Davis Museum at Wellesley College is hosting a special program tomorrow, April 12, 2014, entitled “Family Day at the Davis: The Art of Illusion” from 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. This event will allow you and your family to see artwork that is designed to trick your eyes, watch magic tricks, take part in a scavenger hunt, and a whole lot more. Best of all, the museum and all of its programs are completely free. Finally, if your kids would really prefer to hear some music, the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, MA may have a show that’s more up your alley. This is because the Coolidge Corner Theatre is hosting Josh and the Jamtones tomorrow, April 12, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. This group is a Boston-based rock band that plays family-friendly music for kids 3 and up, and seeing them perform won’t break the bank because tickets to the show are only $10 for adults and $8 for kids.
